art on the streets
Marrickville Open Studio Trail

M.O.S.T 2013

During the two days of MOST2013, part of Art Month Sydney, Chris Tamm and I held Street Art walking Tours to discover the back lanes of Newtown and Enmore seeking out some of Sydney’s best Street Art. With an average of 24 people per tour and the tours lasting for 2 hours we covered some ground and talked till we were hoarse.

What I enjoy most when I participate in any of these events is the wonderful people I meet. Young, old, locals or tourists they are all there to appreciate the Street Art. I guess I just like meeting people as well as having the opportunity to tell someone new an old story.

I also love the face that after 3 tours over 2 days there was still something new to see even time. Did the artists do this for our benefit? I hope so! Witnessed some fresh paste-ups in the railway tunnel and saw some guys creating a new piece in Belmore Lane in Enmore. (Which reminds me I must go and see it completed). The wonderful image of our tour I have featured here was unknowingly snapped off by prolific Street Art photographer Baddogwhiskas.

Which goes to prove that Street Art is well and truly a living gallery and there is always something new to see. Most of our tour participants were happy enough to send in their comments. Here are just a few Ive received this week.

Thanks to Marrickville Council, Melinda and Christopher for the opportunity to participate in the Street Art Walking Tour – I hope the program is run again next year. I will certainly encourage friends and family to take part in what was a thoroughly engaging and worthwhile activity. I took lots of photos and made many notes in my little red book for future reference, particularly for when I focus on this type of art in the primary school classroom.

Hi Melinda, We really enjoyed the tour last Saturday, it was great to discover street arts in some places we usually don’t go as we aren’t from Newtown. Hope you will keep doing this in the future.
All my best, – Marine

Hi Melinda, I participated int he 2pm walking tour n Saturday and found it to be very interesting as well as informative. Our hosts were great. As a result of this tour I gained an insight and background to this particular branch of art that is new to me,along with a greater appreciation of it and the talent behind it. The tour gave me an opportunity to learn and experience something new.I will be on the lookout for more tours
Thank you – Kristina

hanks heaps for a great tour. Ive just moved inner west and was a great way to checkout the street art. the tour gave me a deeper appreciation of street art, artists, and a new appreciation of the grotty back alley. You obviously have heaps of experience and were able to pass on your passion and knowledge to the group. Id highly recommend the tour to anyone- young/old/new to the area/local….
Thanks, Angela

i really liked the tour but the graffiti artist kept speaking on top of the other woman leading the tour who had a lot of things to say also and as we found out at the end she has written a book on street art in the newtown area and a lot of what she wanted to say got overlooked/ talked over –

I laughed when I read this last one … those of you who know me and Chris Tamm would probably find this funny also, as this is the way of our friendship. I speak and Chris talks over me. Coming from and italian family I am quite accustomed to this, and please be assured Z, I have ways of getting my point across. For example … writing a book. You just cant talk over that!

Thank you all for your support I look forward to many more weekends such as this one.

For two days MOST is an opportunity to engage with Marrickville’s thriving independent art scene, view art in progress, visit and purchase art at studios as well as on the streets. I would like to thank Marrickville Council for such an event. I look forward to next year.
