{"id":44,"date":"2019-12-04T03:48:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-04T03:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/?p=44"},"modified":"2019-12-05T23:41:33","modified_gmt":"2019-12-05T23:41:33","slug":"vanishing-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/vanishing-point\/","title":{"rendered":"Vanishing Point"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For years tunnels built to allow people to cross safely under\nrailway lines have been a favourite site for graffiti.&nbsp; Petersham Station subway, like most tunnels\nin the Inner West has always been heavily graffitied and not a very safe or inviting\nspace for local residents who often have to use these tunnels on their daily\ncommute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year the Inner West council in collaboration with\nSydney Trains have commissioned artwork as part of the Perfect Match Contemporary\nArt Program to paint the tunnel, preventing unwanted graffiti through fostering\nlegitimate art in public spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Called \u201c<em>Vanishing\nPoint\u201d<\/em> this artwork is a collaborative works by local artists Tim Phibs, <br>\nBrad Eastman, James P Simon and George Rose. The mural creates a visual journey\nfor commuters as the travel throughout the tunnel. Geometric patterns derived\nfrom aerial photographs of the railway tracks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This mural is a celebration of contemporary street art, the\nacknowledging of traditional owners of this land and dedicated team of people\nwho believe that fighting the battle against graffiti is not won by covering\nwalls with brown but often more successfully received when bringing art to the\npublic while offering a showcase for our local artists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/vanishing1.jpg?resize=525%2C221&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46\" width=\"525\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/vanishing1.jpg?w=451&amp;ssl=1 451w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/vanishing1.jpg?resize=300%2C126&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Vanishing2.png?resize=525%2C221&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47\" width=\"525\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Vanishing2.png?w=451&amp;ssl=1 451w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Vanishing2.png?resize=300%2C126&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sydney Trains, strict zero tolerance to graffiti along with the Heritage listing of the Tunnel mean this project almost did not go ahead, being bogged down in bureaucratic paperwork. But council was dedicated to the pursuit of the project along with the determination of the artists meant the success of this landmark piece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While openly admitting years ago he may have once been\nresponsible for some of the graffiti in the tunnel, he is now fortunate enough to\nmake a career out of his skills. Street art projects such as these can be\ninspiring to young artist considering a future in the arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inner west is Sydney\u2019s spiritual home of\nstreet art.
