And so the cycle goes on, proving an expensive exercise to remove each time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why not turn the cycle around? This is whats being done in and around the Inner West with outstanding results. Sydney\u2019s Inner West Council has recognised it is time to consider a different attitude towards graffiti. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Perfect Match program is a renowned alternative council initiative started to combat local graffiti. Now resulting in something far greater than anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perfect Match is a unique initiative tackling\nunwanted graffiti through fostering legitimate creative expression and art in\npublic spaces. This program has grown to become one of Australia\u2019s best-known\npublic art and graffiti prevention initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program\u2019s unique approach brings artists,\nresidents, businesses, property owners and the community together to\ncollaboratively create fantastic new street artworks in public places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Newtown\u2019s Bedford Foundary <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One perfect example of a successful response\nto battle graffiti is at the Bedford Foundary apartment block in Newtown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically this building site was a playground for graffiti artist wanting to hone their artistic skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"525\" height=\"318\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_5602BF.jpg?resize=525%2C318&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_5602BF.jpg?w=1000&amp;ssl=1 1000w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_5602BF.jpg?resize=300%2C182&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_5602BF.jpg?resize=768%2C465&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption><em> BEFORE DEVELOPMENT: the building was constantly targeted by taggers <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Located close to railway lines, proven\nattractive for offenders, the site\u2019s developers knew they had to find a new\nmethod to address the issue of constant tagging and feature this in the design\nof the new apartment development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The developers, in collaboration with\narchitect, PBD Architects, designed a building that responds to the culture of\nthe local community, and doesn\u2019t work against it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bedford Foundary apartment block features space for a large street art piece on the surrounding, diagonally piercing blade walls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"525\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1505990_1439282719642462_407315237_n.jpg?resize=525%2C340&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1505990_1439282719642462_407315237_n.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1505990_1439282719642462_407315237_n.jpg?resize=300%2C194&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/finelinedesign.com.au\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/1505990_1439282719642462_407315237_n.jpg?resize=768%2C498&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption> <br> ARTIST IMPRESSION POST DEVELOPMENT: The Bedford Foundary <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Social media used to seek artists<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission was then set to\nfind the right artist for the development. A social media campaign was\nestablished by the developers calling for entries from artist interested in\nbeing involved in the project:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em><em>Do you want to be the artist commissioned to paint the\ngraffiti works on this forth coming development?\nSend us what a draft of the artwork which you would install on this\nbuilding. The judging will be based on community voting (ie likes, and\ncomments) as well as suitability for the project which will be determined by\nthe developers and architects.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several responses were\nreceived and the decision was made to commission\nthe artwork of highly respected local street artist, Steven Nuttall, well known\nas Ox King. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result was outstanding. This striking artwork spans the entire western feature wall in a burst of red, blue and orange colour.
